In the story, "Silence," the girl realizes that her mother lied about why she cut her tongue. What helped her persevere (succeed or get through a struggle)? Give at least 3 examples including quotes from the text. Include an introduction and conclusion.

In the story, “Silence,” by Maxim Hong, the girl realizes that her mom cut her tongue for no reason. There are a few things that helped her get through her struggle.

First, she helped herself by painting pictures all black. She wanted to communicate with her paintings she felt that she was on a black stage. She thought that she was going to speak better in the future.

Second, she often kept asking questions her about her tongue to her mother about why her mother did that to her. She was always asking her about her tongue, what she did to it, why she would do that, and why she does not like to talk about it. Maybe the girl wishes to go back to the past and see what happened in her life. She probably asked questions to her mom because she wondered why her mother cut her tongue because she felt that her mother was hiding a secret from her.

Thirdly, another thing that helped her persevere was Chinese school. She talks in Chinese school but she did not talk in American school because she said that she doesn’t like her voice; she thinks it sounds “hideous.” Why did she talk in Chinese school? Because she felt like she fit in and she felt more comfortable doing things the Chinese way. In American school you need to perform like you are on a stage, but in Chinese school, she felt that all the Chinese students worked together in a group to help each other.

Finally, the girl’s struggle existed because she didn’t feel like herself because her mother cut her tongue to talk better, but the mother is keeping something from her…that she lied. Trying to wonder why her mother did that, she asked her a lot of questions about when she was little. In the end of the story, when she was in Chinese School, she got up and recited to the whole class even though her voice sounded like, “a crippled animal running.” But, she never quit. In school, she got up and participated and in her house she stands up for herself because she learned what she wanted to know about her life, about her mother cutting her tongue. As a result she became very happy because she learned how to speak better and believe in herself by practicing.
